Letters Legibility

Letters legibility is determined by several factors. Among them are the types of font used, the font’s color, the contrast, the lighting, other environmental factors and, of course, the font’s size.

While we cannot cover all the points, that most of them are specific to your location and external terms, but we may help you with points you can determine.

The type of font you should prefer to increase the legibility is sans-serif, same types dictated by the ADA regulations (you can read all about it on ADA Fonts).

The colors and contrast comprise a complete subject by themselves and will be covered herein in the future.

So we are left with the most important factor in letter legibility, which is the font’s size. There is a difference if you write with all capital letters or mix lower and upper case. Apparently, it is easier to recognize the letters when they are in lower case.

Here is a table that shows the distance the font will be seen in relation to its size. The font used here is Helvetica (black on white background) as seen in natural lighting.
